Lighting: Ensure your face is well-lit, preferably with natural light facing you, or use a ring light to avoid shadows and enhance visibility.
Camera Position: Position the camera at eye level to help maintain a natural, direct line of sight with the audience. If using a laptop, you might need to stack it on some books to raise the camera to eye level.
Background: Choose a clean, uncluttered background. If possible, use a neutral wall or a tidy space that doesn’t distract from the conversation. Consider using a virtual background if the real one is not suitable.
Sound Quality: Use a good quality microphone if available. This could be an external USB microphone or a headset. Avoid relying on the computer’s built-in microphone if possible, as it can pick up a lot of ambient noise.
Internet Connection: Ensure a stable and strong internet connection. Wired connections (Ethernet) are more reliable than wireless ones (Wi-Fi) for video calls and recordings.
Close Unnecessary Applications: Before starting, close any unnecessary applications on your computer to ensure maximum processing power for your recording application and to minimize interruptions.
Dress Appropriately: Wear solid colors as they show up better on camera and avoid complex patterns that can create visual noise in the video. Also, avoid jewelry that could make noise.
Framing: Frame yourself so that you fill most of the screen; typically from the chest up is ideal. This helps maintain a connection with your audience as if you’re in the same room.
Eye Contact: Look directly at the camera lens when speaking. This mimics eye contact with the viewer and helps create a more personal and engaging interaction.
Prepare Your Materials: If you need to refer to notes, try to have them close to the camera to keep your eye movements minimal and maintain 'eye contact' with the audience.
Test Everything: Before the actual recording, do a test recording to check the video and audio quality, and adjust any settings if necessary.
Stay Hydrated: Keep a glass of water nearby and take sips as needed, especially before you start, to avoid a dry throat while speaking. Also, keep a box of tissues nearby as some people tend to sneeze or have a runny nose when under recording stress.
Relax and Smile: Finally, take a deep breath, relax your shoulders, smile, and maintain an engaging posture to convey friendliness and confidence.
